Kevin De Bruyne: The Belgian Giant

One of the behemoths in the realm of football, Kevin De Bruyne was born on June 28, 1991 in Ghent, Belgium. Considered as the greatest midfielder of this generation is known for his impeccable dribbling and flawless passing. He wears shirt no. 17 for Manchester City and 7 for Belgium national football team and captains both Manchester City and Belgium national team. He watched and admired Liverpool football club which plays in premier league based in England growing up and Michael Owen was his favourite football player at that time.

Youth Journey and Senior Club career

KDB started his youth career with KVV Drongen club in 1997, then he joined Ghent from 1999 to 2005, then he played for Genk from 2005 to 2008 in his youth. Kevin De Bruyne started his senior club debut with Genk against Charleroi, a club plays in Belgian pro league on May 9, 2009. He scored his first goal for the club on February 7, 2010 against standard Liège. He made 97 appearances for Genk and scored 16 goals for the club. KDB won 2010-11 Belgian pro league with Genk. On January 31, 2012, it was revealed that Chelsea, which is a premier league club, has signed Kevin De Bruyne with transfer fee of approximately £7 million.

He made his club debut with Chelsea on July 18, 2012 against Seattle Sounders FC which is a Major League soccer club, a league based in USA in a friendly match. He played only 3 matches for Chelsea and unfortunately was not able to score any goal for Chelsea. Kevin De Bruyne went to Germany to join Bundesliga club Werder Bremen on loan from Chelsea on July 31, 2012, scored his first goal against Hannover 96. KDB made 33 appearances for Werder Bremen and was successful in netting 10 goals.

Lucrative Career at Bundesliga club VFL Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg signed this Belgian giant for a fee of £18 million on January 18, 2014. After 7 days of signing, Kevin De Bruyne played his debut match with Wolfsburg against Hannover 96 on January 25, 2014, which resulted in home defeat 3-1. He made his first mark at Wolfsburg by assisting 2 goals against 1. FC Nürnberg. He scored his first goal for Wolfsburg against Hamburger SV. He played pivotal role in winning 2014-15 DFB-POKAL, Which is a German football competition. In his 52 matches for Wolfsburg, he managed to score 13 goals. Kevin De Bruyne’s versatile playmaking resulted in the attention of many giant clubs of Europe.

Making history with Manchester city

Manchester city Signed this exceptional talent from Wolfsburg for a reported club record fee of 55 million pounds, he was the second most expensive transfer in premier league history, first expensive transfer was Angel Di Maria at that time in 2014, when he joined Manchester United, a premier league giant. He made his premier league club debut against Crystal Palace on September 12, 2015 and scored his first goal for the club against West Ham United on September 19, 2015. He was shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or award, which is a prestigious award in the world of football, in the same year. His presence was heavily felt by other clubs in premier league and equally in Europe. He has played essential role in many crucial games of Manchester city both in premier league and champions league. He has also scored in many games against Manchester City’s rival Liverpool.

Kevin De Bruyne has made 240 appearances for Manchester City so far and managed to score 64 goals for the club. Ever since he has joined Manchester City, he has savoured many triumphs, like five Premier League titles, two FA cups, five league cups and a UEFA Champions League title. He was awarded player of the season for 2019-20 and 2021-22. He won the historical continental treble with Manchester City lately. He is still playing for Manchester City.

Kevin De Bruyne’s International Career

Kevin De Bruyne made his Belgian senior team debut on August 11, 2010 in a friendly match against Finland national football team. He was selected for 2014 FIFA World Cup squad and played his first match against Algeria and was named man of the match by FIFA. He was also selected for UEFA Euro 2016 and then for 2018 FIFA World Cup. He has played with the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard in the Belgium national team.
